Fuel Shark Cigarette Lighter Fuel Saver Review / Teardown

Fuel Shark Cigarette Lighter Fuel Saver Device

Before reading further, if you have not already seen the write-up on the Fuel Shark Fuel saver module at jalopnik then take a look at it here: https://jalopnik.com/fuelshark-wants-us-to-apologize-because-they-sell-bulls-1527588505

We point you here first as it provides you with a background on this device and it’s history. The jalopnik article did a review on the Fuel Shark fuel saver device several years ago and came to the conclusion that it DOES NOT work and is a scam. There was even a lawsuit filed over this junk and the original Fuel Shark is not being sold anymore due to this as far as we know. However, we decided to do our own test as the clone ‘NeoSocket’ version we received had different components inside, so it may actually deliver on the fuel saving claims – or will it?

This is a unique device due to it’s claims to alter fuel economy by connecting to the vehicle’s cigarette lighter port, which in most vehicles only supplies 12V and ground connections (no connection to the vehicle’s communication bus or computer). It claims to use electronic signals to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, saving on fuel costs.

We provide our analysis below of the Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver Cigarette lighter plug and reveal what is really inside this product.

This article involves reverse engineering and analyzing the “Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver” Cigarette lighter plug module in order to identify if it truly works as advertised or not.

CASE / PACKAGING

The original Fuel Shark Fuel Saver Plug comes in a unique looking pod shaped cigarette lighter plug with a blue plastic top. The Neosocket clone we received looks VERY similar to the original, aside from the logo on the top:

Aside from looking nice, does it work?

A look at the claims on the package causes some suspicion right off the bat:

Not only does it claim to increase gas mileage, it also claims to lower emissions, increase horsepower AND extend battery life – all with a simple cigarette lighter plug in! Either this is some seriously advanced technology inside this thing, or we are being taken big-time. If it is able to do this, we will be the first to admit we were wrong – but I doubt it 😉 Taking a look at the back side of the package provides even more claims of fuel economy gains:

Fuel savings vary anywhere from 10% – 23% according to the package. While this would be impressive with just a simple plug in cigarette lighter device, we see where this was made once again in the lower right hand corner of the box. Made in China. Still, can it deliver these results?

COST

The Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver Cigarette Lighter plug device can be found on various websites across the net for anywhere from $2 – $18. A VERY suspicious price range, as this is WAY too cheap to produce any device to save on fuel. However, if it’s claims are true, fuel savings for only $18? What a steal!! What is actually inside the Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver?

INTERNAL ANALYSIS

We ordered a Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver Cigarette lighter device and removed the outer plastic case:

We are presented with a VERY basic circuit board which contains a large capacitor, three resistors and a LED (light emitting diode). In addition there was a fuse (they didn’t have to go to all this expense)! Just from this alone we can see we have been taken – there is no way three resistors, a capacitor and light can alter fuel economy in a vehicle. Just as the original Fuel Shark was found to be a scam, it looks like this clone is as well. Further inspection of the underside of the circuit board confirms this:

As we can see, there are no surface mount chips or other components present, so all we have are the three resistors, capacitor and light on the top side of the board. This is simply a circuit to limit current to run the led – there is no capability to affect anything else on the vehicle!

An interesting comparison is that of this Neosocket Fuel Shark PCB to that of the original Fuel Shark fuel saver components shown on the web. The difference? This ‘clone’ Neosocket Fuel Shark actually HAS a circuit board to fool users into thinking it is more advanced than it really is. The original Fuel Shark fuel saver HAD NO CIRCUIT BOARD:

As you can see, literally the ONLY difference between this clone and the original Fuel Shark is that the clone added a circuit board and ONE resistor! The capacitor, two resistors and light are all the same! The takeaway from this is the clone used a circuit board to fool people who wouldn’t know any better into thinking it has the capability of saving fuel, when in reality it is the same as the original scam fuel saver – it does nothing but shine a pretty blue light!

From these facts, we can clearly see that the Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver cigarette lighter plug is just a scam and is not what it claims to be. Our first suspicion was correct. We didn’t even connect this to our test vehicle as connecting a capacitor and three resistors to our cigarette lighter socket will have 0 effect on fuel economy. This was proven with the numerous tests on the original Fuel Shark as well. It is really sad, this was a sleek looking case, but like many other devices, it is designed to fool people and make quick money for the manufacturer. Oh and it also illuminates the inside of your vehicle with a pretty blue light!

CONCLUSION

From our research as well as testing we find that the Neosocket Fuel Shark Fuel Saver is just another of the many fuel saver scams on the market. Our instincts early on were correct. Don’t give any of your hard earned money for this ‘fuel saver’ – you’re better off to SAVE your money instead!

      1. If a device is made that would ACTUALLY work, it would cost much more than this, however in my experience, I yet to see a product that works!

    1. If a device is made that would ACTUALLY work, it would cost much more than this, however in my 30+years experience, I yet to see a product that works!

  1. What a fool I am, should have researched 1st. I wish I read this before spending the dollars. Gonna put it to the test see for myself.

      1. . If you bought this you might want to think about relinquishing all responsibilities you’re entrusted with that can in any way affect the safety of anyone or thing including yourself. Besides not wanting to accept you’re a gullible fool causing you to subconsciously drive more calm and not stomp on the gas leaving every red light since you plugged this flashlight in to your cigarette lighter, this does nothing to improve your gas mileage

  2. If it really worked, the car manufacturers would be all lined up to buy it so they could meet the government requirements for better mileage. But the ads for this crap prey on people’s love of conspiracy theories.

  3. I listened to the ad, and knew it couldn’t work, but ordered one on 6 November anyhow for laughs. . Haven’t received it yet. Since it is coming from China, it will take at least another 2- 3 weeks.

  4. Strange. I used to fill up once a week and now I fill up every two weeks.. Maybe I got a bad one. Only had it for 3 weeks.

  5. I knew from the very beginning of this video that NO and I mean NOTHING plugged into a cig lighter would alter gas mileage. Even the schpiel they were handing me in the video made no sense at all. I knew within 15 sec’s of watching , it was a scam.

  6. Does anyone have the address to these Scammers? I show a return address of 147-03 182 Street.
    Thank You,
    Col. Mike

  7. i just received mine and of course NOW i’m looking at this site. WHEN will I learn??!!
the return address I show is 1436 guy r Brewer Blvd #A
    Jamaica, NY 11434

How can I see if this is even a real address before I pay to send it back??!!

  8. I purchased 5 of these worthless unit and gave them to friends and family and not one of them worked as they claimed they would.
    I paid or wasted a $100.
If anyone plans to sue this company I’d like to get involved.
It sounded to good to true 🤬

    1. How do you contact them.the add I saw said the unit plugged into the analysis port under the dash .this thing is a joke.there is no contact info anywhere. Help if you can. Thks dave

  9. I saw this device in our van and asked my wife ‘what is this? She tells me what they claim. I say, nope, scam.
    Elixir for your car. Yeah..no.

  10. Yeah man , I want in on the lawsuit if there is one brewin’.!. It’s high time we put the scammers where they really belong. I’m burned out with the scams. They’re constant. I want in!!! Can ANYBODY give me heads up.
    This is overkill.
    Thanks peeps🤘😎🤘

  11. I am one more gullible sheep who bought two. I am trying to get a refund but the company appears to be pretty well hidden. Any help will be VERY appreciated.

  12. I does not work to save fuel at all! Just a waste of money. Np address on the package for returns! when will I learn how to spend money?

  13. I’m not very technology-savvy, but I saw the interesting article on Facebook and bought it. Very cheap and decided to try.

The result is that my car with a full tank gives me little more than 120 kms and more power.

My car is a 2018 Journey 4 cyl.

  14. Very funny, at the same time lucky me, I just ordered for this item, and chose to pay on delivery, am definitely not gonna pay for this trash when it delivers tomorrow….

  15. A much better analysis than the original Jalopnik one. Torchinsky’s as much of a journalist as National Enquirer is a reliable media outlet. I wouldn’t even link that article – all it does is make me trust neither the company or the writer.

  16. STUPID ME …! I BOUGHT TWO OF THEM IN GOOD FAITH…, AS AN CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR TWO OF MY SISTERS…NOW I SEE IT IS A SCAM…? PEOPLE WHO MANUFACTURED THESE SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR A WHILE….! THE SELLERS SHOULD PAY THE BUYERS THREE TIMES AS WHATEVER IT DID COST..!!!!!
    THAT WILL TEACH THEM…………..
